Museo del Tesoro di San Gennaro

Naples, Italy (2017- )

After planning and programming studies, Museoplan has started architectural design for the complete reconstruction of the Museum, which houses the collection of jeweled religious artifacts, reliquaries and sculptures in gold and silver belonging to the Cappella di San Gennaro.  The Chapel, attached to the Duomo, is a landmark of Neapolitan Baroque architecture and painting; its holdings of art objects dating back over five centuries tell the remarkable story of the patron saint of the city of Naples and is considered to be one of the finest such collections in the world.

The plan expands the museum to approximately 1500 square meters on all floors of the XVII c. Palazzo della Deputazione and includes a courtyard entry with a new café and a panoramic terrace on the roof at the foot of the chapel’s dome. The priceless jeweled mitra and collana of San Gennaro will each be installed in its own gallery while the collection of life-sized silver statues of other saints will occupy the entire third floor. The lower level will provide the museum with new archival storage and office space.  The project also restores the historic Sacrestia and Cappella della Concezione and will connect the museum visit directly to the Chapel of San Gennaro.  Concept Design and Feasibility 2018; Architectural Design 2019 –
