Museum of Modern Art

A full reorganization and major expansion of the Museum totaling 630,000 square feet of new construction and renovation built to designs of Y. Tanaguchi who was awarded the commission after a competition in 1997.  Stephen Rustow led the American architectural team for KPF, the architect of record who had responsibility for all stages of the work from design development through construction.   

The project was organized in two distinct phases:

the Gallery Wing with five stories of new gallery space for the museum’s departmental collections configured around a sky-lit Atrium; a new through-block entrance; complete restoration of the historic Goodwin-Stone building of 1939 and integral reconstruction of the Museum’s celebrated Sculpture Garden. Completed 2004.

the Education Wing KPF was exclusively responsible for the revised programming and redesign which included study centers for four of the six departments; the Library and Archives; a 120-seat auditorium; a 50-seat screening room; and all of the Museum’s educational programs. Completed 2006.
