Grand Canal Museum

Hangzhou, China (2020 – 2021)

Museoplan was asked to undertake museum planning and architectural review for a major new museum recounting the history of the Grand Canal, the oldest and longest canal in the world. Located in Hangzhou, at the southern origin of the canal, this new institution will be housed in a competition-winning, mixed-use design by Herzog deMeuron, and includes 26,000 square meters of exhibition space on two enormous, cantilevered floors. Museoplan provided guidelines and review for all of the museum design issues and developed the layouts for the complete program of museum support spaces.  Construction will start in 2022.  In a separate consultation, Museoplan was also invited to design preliminary exhibition layouts for the permanent galleries of the museum.
