National Museum Complex

Sofia, Bulgaria (2010 – )

Museoplan and Yanko Apostolov Architect were the winners of an international architectural competition to create a new museum for the Bulgarian national art collections. The project, in the historic center of Sofia just a block from the Nevski Cathedral, combines the renovation of the 19th c. Royal Printing House and several later additions with substantial new construction. The museum’s design will produce a fully integrated building of 22,000 square meters that includes galleries, an auditorium and education spaces as well as full storage and conservation facilities. At the center of the plan is a new open sculpture court, a significant addition to the public space of the central city.

Full design documentation was completed in 2012 and the project is currently completing construction. Museoplan, working directly with the principal architect, was responsible for the design and development of all of the galleries, the art storage and conservation facilities, and assuring the functionality of visitor circulation throughout the building.
