National China Museum

Stephen Rustow was the architect in charge of the gallery design effort on this invited competition for a complete redevelopment of the existing museum on Tiananmen Square. The total project of 100,000 square meters included over 30,000 square meters of new galleries with extensive day lighting and passive cooling systems, as well as special rooms for fragile scroll paintings, lacquer objects and manuscripts. The galleries were designed for both short-term flexibility and long-term reconfiguration as the national historic collections were consolidated and reorganized over a projected twenty-year period. The project was one of the three finalists in a field of twenty international entries.
